Windshield & Auto Glass in Beaverton
Rock chips come with driving Highway 26 and 217. Catch one early and it can often be repaired in under an hour. Wait, and it can spread into a crack that means a new windshield. Here’s the auto glass shop we recommend, how to tell a repair from a replacement, and the step many newer cars need after a new windshield goes in.
No one pays to be listed on this page. We’ve had good luck with the glass shop, and it’s just down Canyon Road from us.
Which Auto Glass Shop Do We Trust?
Why this one? Jeff: “We’ve had good luck with MS Glass.”
- MS Glass Outlet: Beaverton, at 11495 SW Canyon Rd. Windshield chip and crack repair, windshield replacement, and side, rear and sunroof glass. They can come to your home or work, and they bill insurance directly. They also recalibrate the driver-assist camera after a windshield replacement, at the Beaverton shop. Open Monday to Friday, 7 to 4, and Saturday, 9 to 1. Phone: 503-227-6666 | Website
Should You Repair or Replace a Chip or Crack?
Small damage can usually be repaired. A repair fills the damage with resin and seals it so it stops spreading. It’s quicker and cheaper than a new windshield. MS Glass Outlet’s rule of thumb is that damage can usually be repaired when it is:
- Small. A chip smaller than a quarter, or a crack shorter than six inches.
- Out of the driver’s line of sight. Damage right in front of the driver usually means a new windshield.
- Away from the edge. More than about two inches in from the edge of the glass.
- In the outer layer only. A windshield is two layers of glass. If the damage goes through to the inside layer, it’s a replacement.
Don’t wait on it. Water and dirt get into a chip, and a cold night or a bump in the road can turn it into a crack. A quick photo to the glass shop is usually enough for them to tell you which one you need.
Why Does the Camera Behind Your Windshield Matter?
Many newer cars have a camera mounted behind the windshield, near the mirror. It runs driver-assist features like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. When the windshield is replaced, that camera usually needs to be recalibrated so it sees the road exactly where the car thinks it does.
- Ask before you book. Ask whether your car needs a calibration, whether it’s included in the quote, and where it will be done.
- Mobile replacement, shop calibration. MS Glass Outlet does calibrations only at its Beaverton shop, so a windshield replaced at your home may still need a trip to Canyon Road.
- If the glass shop can’t do your car, a dealer service department for your make can.
- Warning light afterward? If a lane-keeping or collision warning light comes on after a new windshield, call the glass shop that did the work.
What Should You Do After a New Windshield?
- Give the adhesive time. The windshield is held in by urethane that needs to cure. MS Glass Outlet says to allow at least one to two hours before driving, and the technician will tell you when it’s safe.
- Check your insurance first. Before you pay out of pocket, check your auto policy. MS Glass Outlet bills insurance directly and handles the claim.
- Keep the paperwork. Hang on to the invoice, and ask what the warranty covers.
