Check for these signs of a broken air conditioning system to determine if your vehicle’s air conditioning is malfunctioning or on the way out.
1. Warm air is blowing from the AC.
If your car’s air conditioning is blowing warm air or the system is malfunctioning, the expansion valve or orifice tube needs to be replaced.
2. You notice a strange, weird smell when using your AC system.
In the event that your air conditioning has not been used recently, bacteria and fungus can form, resulting in a foul odor.
3. There is a lot of moisture inside your car.
When the air inside your car is moist, the most common cause is usually humidity or debris trapped in your air conditioning system.
4. The cold air is weak, or no cold air is blowing at all.
The most common reason why your air conditioning stops cooling is due to an insufficient level of refrigerant, a broken condenser, or a damaged compressor belt.
5. There’s a leak from your air conditioning.
When your AC system is functioning properly, it will drain water outside your vehicle. Consequently, a clog in your water line can cause backups in other places, including the floor mats on your floor. In order to prevent an extremely dangerous situation, leaks of refrigerants must be addressed as soon as possible.
6. A loud whirring noise can be heard.
If you hear a loud, high-pitched whirring noise while operating the air conditioner, it could be due to a shot compressor bearing (if the noise is coming from the engine bay). On the other hand, if the noise is coming from inside the cabin, it could be the blower fan assembly that needs to be repaired.
7. Overheating of the engine
The compressor also uses engine power (via the serpentine belt) like the steering and water pump. There is a possibility that the compressor’s clutch can seize, causing an unnecessary load on the compressor. As a result, the engine overheats.

It would be best if you had it checked out when something seems out of the ordinary with your air conditioning system between routine maintenance appointments.
You can recharge a car’s freon at home with freon recharging kits made available online and in automotive supply stores. Even if it seems like a convenient alternative to taking your vehicle to a mechanic, working on your A/C system at home carries some significant risks.
Adding too much freon or over pressurizing your car’s cooling system can permanently damage the A/C compressor clutch if you recharge it at home. Often, a thirty-dollar repair can become a repair that costs more than the vehicle is worth. A person may decide to take this risk based on their experience in auto repair.

The rear window on the driver side decided to not go up last week. Come to find out the motor was toast. So I went over to my guys and they took care of me in a timely manner as usual. As an afterthought I asked them to check my battery and they did put the little machine on it. I guess that then I spit out a ticket telling me that it was 100%. Motorcar doctors (previously known as Clutch Doctors) are great, they have taken great care of Mimi (my beloved purple speed-demon vampire car) for the past 10-ish years, and they have (on several occasions) even done things for her that they didn't charge me for, and they always park Mimi inside when she stays overnight because she has a soft top (so I am paranoid about break ins if she is left in the parking lot over night). Today I took her in because she was squeaking underneath in a new way, and I was braced for needing transmission or suspension work, thinking omg what now (25 year old Miata, admittedly she is "at that age" where things can go wrong), I'm thinking omg his is going to be expensive. Turned out it was just a loose bolt and they didn't charge me. Thank you so much, I feel like you know Mimi (and me) so well. Here is to another 10 years 🙂
